Style and Aesthetic

What Remains of Edith Finch is a beautiful and visually appealing game with many colours and details of the house. The house is cluttered which tells us a lot about the family who used to live there. It gives an insight into each person’s room. It feels like a real home, messy and disorganized. It also allows the space to be open and yet keeps the user on the correct path, an alternative to The Stanley Parable, Ultra Deluxe.

The character that the user plays carries around a notebook with the family tree drawn inside. It is an actual tree with branches and as the user unlocks each member’s room, they are drawn into the notebook. This helps bring the family to life as we see what they look like. It also adds a charm that it is sketched in rather than actual pictures. In this game, we see the player’s hands, a notable comparison to The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe where we only see Stanley’s hands once.

The voiceovers are done incredibly well, with each character having their own voice and they become the narrator when the user discovers their story. In addition to this, each character gets their own font to tell their story. This gives the game a sense of life and allows the player to care for the characters upon hearing their voice (Davis)
